Rye
From Wiki Sussex
Rye is in East Sussex and lies at the point where the sandstone high land of the Weald reaches the coast. Rye was considered one of the finest of the Cinque Ports. Medieval maps show that Rye was once located on a large bay and was an important location for the shipment and storage of iron, especially armaments.
The changing course of the River Rother and violent storms in the 13th Century cut the town off from the sea. The reclamation of the bay allowed gravel to move along the coast by longshore drift and block the entrance of the port. Storms in 1375 destroyed the eastern part of the town.
Rye's economy is now mainly based on tourism, with a wide selection of attractions, hotels and restaurants. In Rye Harbour a fishing fleet lands fish daily. Some of the fish is sold at the Strand quay but most is sold at the market in Boulogne. Rye Farmers Market is held every Wednesday on Strand Quay.
