Mayfield is a town in East Sussex near Five Ashes and Argos Hill. The name Mayfield is derived from Maghefeld (Maid's Field). Mayfield benefited from the boom in the Wealden iron industry and many of the houses date from that time.

Mayfield is famous for the legend of St Dunstan:

St Dunstan, as the story goes,
Once pull'd the devil by the nose
With red-hot tongs, which made him roar,
That he was heard three miles or more.

On another visit the Devil asked St Dunstan to nail a horseshoe to his horse but he saw through his disguise and nailed it to the Devil's hoof instead. The Devil pleaded for mercy and promised never to enter any house with a horseshoe above the door if St Dunstan took it off and let him go. This is claimed as the origin of the lucky horseshoe.
